Raps are overtaking the NHL on must-see TV list
By JODY VANCE -- Sun Media
When asked, "Jody what is your favourite sport?" my stock standard answer has always been, "Anything in the playoffs."
Truth be told, my favourite sport is -- shocker -- NHL hockey.
While my first answer may seem rather generic and inclusive it is a fact -- a fact that all of a sudden comes with a caveat.
Allow me to explain.
First of all here's the way it has always been:
If there is playoff hockey to be watched, it trumps all -- no exceptions.
Conversely if there is regular-season hockey on against, say, the Super Bowl, Grey Cup, World Series, etc., I'm all in on the championship game and will simply catch highlights of said hockey contest later.
Always, always, always, hockey playoffs would win in my war of the remote ... always, that is, until this spring.
The exciting unpredictability of the 2007 Toronto Raptors has me not only torn in my nightly viewing, but actually opting for all of the hard court action and "checking in" on the NHL.
It's like Bizarro world from the Superman comics where everything is backwards.
I kid you not, and I'm even more than a little shocked at this.
The NHL Eastern Conference finalists can blame Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani, T.J. Ford, et al. for this paradigm shift in my sports viewing habits.
They are delivering some serious sports entertainment.
While the world (OK, me) feared that history might repeat itself Tuesday night, ending the Raptors run, these young men showed not to count them out til that final buzzer.
Still an NHL devotee, I'm OK with my new TV-tuning dilemma as it is a good problem to have. Kind of like the issue of having two answers to "Jody what is your favourite sport?"
