Argos are Hogan's heroes

In Canada, often the sports dream is all about a gig at the hockey rink or the baseball field or even the basketball court -- not for Mike Hogan.

The FAN 590 host has always made it known that his passion lies with the pigskin.

"Hoagie," as he is known to listeners and friends alike, has had a dream-come-true week as he was announced Tuesday as The Toronto Argonauts radio play-by-play man -- again.

A self-professed and obvious football freak, Mike held the play-by-play job briefly six years ago, but lost it when the Argos switched to AM640 as their broadcast carrier.

You know he will be one excited cookie June 9 when the switch is flipped on this new broadcast era.

Things will be a little tighter in the booth as the team goes with a three-man format for the first time. Stepping up to the mic with Mike are mainstay colour analyst and former Argos linebacker (1965 - '72) Peter Martin along with the ever colourful firecracker and more-recently retired member of the Boatmen, Adrion Smith.

This should be good.

Hogan is pumped for the whole ball of wax, but... "Mostly I'm looking forward to travelling with the team and being immersed in the CFL culture again. I missed the road trips, the chats on the plane, the football discussions over a beer and in general picking people's brains about a sport I love a lot and never want to stop learning about."

Hoagie's goal is to, "Bring a Grey Cup winning season to fans (laughs)", and share his enthusiasm for the sport.

He admits to not really having a broadcast role model per se, but, "I love Dick Enberg calling football. I think he's still the best of the bunch." He is quick to add, "That said, if you ever hear me say 'oh MY!' slap me in the head. That's his."

A true original, we give Hoagie a pat on the back (until the slap in the head) and say congratulations on getting back to his field of dreams.
