Toskala, Stajan in sorry state
By GARY LOEWEN, SUN MEDIA
It's always somethin' with Maple Leafs goaltender Vesa Loss-kala.
Seems either he's having an MRI or else he's MIA.
Double Blue Rodeo
Blue Rodeo will play during the Grey Cup halftime show, and fans can vote on which three songs -- from a list of 10 -- that the band will play.
One of the songs on the list is Lost Together .. y'know, just in case the Argos happen to show up.
Oct. 13 just isn't Matt Stajan's day. The Maple Leafs centre was benched yesterday, on Oct. 13, for the second year in a row.
He did bounce back from the benching last year, so this has the makings of an annual tradition.
It has been a woeful year for Toronto football teams -- both the Argos and the time-share Bills.
Should the Argos manage to lose at home on Friday against Edmonton, they would have the same winning percentage, .250, as the Bills and a combined record of 4-16.
The Rogers Off-Centre hasn't been kind to either team.
Since the start of the 2008 season, the Argos are 3-12 at home while the Counterfeit Bills take an 0-1 "home" record into their game against the New York Jets on Dec. 3.
Both head coaches, Bart Andrus of the Argos and Dick Jauron of the Bills, have come under fire for their teams' brutal showings. So, how about a straight swap, Andrus for Jauron ... it would liven up what are otherwise a couple of lost seasons.
Amid speculation that the Bills franchise eventually will end up in Toronto comes news that an Ontario man rescued a half-ton carving of former Bills star Thurman Thomas from vandals who were trying to burn it.
The statue was just unveiled Sunday across from Ralph Wilson Stadium, but apparently now is on this side of the Peace Bridge.
See, the Bills are coming, one piece at a time.
Pass on balls
Sacramento Kings co-owner Joe Maloof has notified the NBA's other 29 teams about the dangers of exercise balls.
Maloof set off alarm bells regarding the inflatable balls after Kings forward Francisco Garcia broke his right wrist while working out.
"Everybody uses these balls," Maloof said. "Every spa in the world, you always see these balls. I think this is a wakeup call."
Clearly, there is no place for inflated balls in the NBA.
