Attention hockey/gold mine speculators:
With Judge Redfield T. Baum opening the Phoenix Coyotes auction to all bidders -- including those who want to relocate the franchise -- it makes sense for other high rollers to get involved.
RimJim Balsillie is bidding $212.5 million -- a bargain-basement price should he end up with an NHL team in the lucrative southern Ontario market.
Its value might be twice that.
However, with the doors wide open, I'm guessing that Count Bettman will be in contact with buddies in Kansas City and Las Vegas who might also be interested in relocating the Desert Dogs ... anything to keep the team out of Hamilton.
During almost three decades as an NHL referee, Kerry Fraser has been mocked for the thick -- and rigid -- stack of hair on his head.
Fraser, on Leafs Lunch on Wednesday, spoke of being confronted by a woman after a playoff game in Buffalo.
"Kerry, I need to talk to you," she said.
The ref was expecting to be quizzed about a call during the game.
The woman had a more important matter on her mind.
"I've got problem hair and I want to know what you use because your hair never moves," she said.
Replied Fraser: "Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine."
No wonder Fraser never needed a helmet.
Pitcher J.A. Happ was relieved to hear he would not be assigned to the bullpen.
If he had, the Philadelphia Phillies starting rotation would have been Happ-less.
Reigns in Spain
Drew Carey, TV personality and co-owner of the Seattle Sounders, became a fan of FC Barcelona after watching two of Spainís top soccer teams practise.
"(The Barcelona players) are so infused with the community there ... It's not just selling tickets to a soccer game. It's being part of the community."
It's no coincidence that Barcelona was in Seattle for an exhibition game Wednesday night against Carey's Sounders, who, like Barcelona, allow the fans to have input in how the team is run.
As for his take on the other Spanish team he watched, Real Madrid, Carey said it was too "corporate."
Fitting, then, that tonight in Toronto, weíre in for the ultimate "corporate" showdown -- Real Madrid versus mighty MLSEL's Toronto FC.
Is there a discount if you wear a jacket and tie?
What's in a name
Real Madrid has Kaka, the Kansas City Royals have Coco Crisp, and now the German national team has a new striker -- Cacau.
Here comes debridement
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb has undergone a debridement.
This was news to wife Alicia, who thought their marriage was solid.
Okay, actually, a procedure called a debridement was used to clean up the labrum and rotator cuff in Webb's right shoulder.
