Monster fit to be tied
By GARY LOEWEN, SUN MEDIA
Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson should be a perfect fit with the Maple Leafs.
"Jonas is considered by many to be the best goaltender not playing in the NHL today," general manager Brian Burke said.
Coincidentally, Gustavsson joins what is considered by many to be the best team in the NHL not to have won a Stanley Cup in 42 years.
Okay, the Chicago Blackhawks might be better.
Garbage strike aside ...
One of the reasons free agent Hedo Turkoglu is signing with the Raptors is that he finds Toronto appealing.
Hope he's ready for some trash-talking.
Jays walking plank
B.J. Ryan is gone now, on the heels of another high-priced free-agent failure, A.J. Burnett.
So, J.P. Ricciardi, what do you think? Are all the double-initialled Blue Jays on their way out of town?
Ricciardi has let it be known the Jays will listen to trade offers for their best player, Roy Halladay.
When Ricciardi arrived as Jays GM in November 2001, Halladay was on the verge of becoming the Jays ace -- the ideal pitcher to build a team around.
We know how that turned out.
Now, almost eight years later, Halladay could be dealt, ostensibly for some young talent.
So, should Ricciardi be put in charge of another rebuilding program? Didn't think so.
Brett settles down
Brett Favre, waffling more than a cook at IHOP, hasn't determined whether to play another season or quit the NFL for good.
Favre has made a down payment on a condo in Minnesota, meaning he likely will play quarterback for the Vikings this year.
But if not, well, the condo is in a retirement community.
The Anaheim Ducks are doing veteran Teemu Selanne a favour, signing his countryman, Saku Koivu.
It's the way Selanne always has wanted to Finnish his career.
Koivu's departure from Montreal, where he served as Canadiens captain for nine years, marks the end of an era.
Habs fans are wondering if, for GM Bob Gainey, it marks the start of a new error.
Actor, comedian and Boston fan Denis Leary was talking sports with ESPN.
On the Red Sox possibly making a bid for Halladay: "Yeah, I would trade the town of Brookline, Mass., which is highly valued real estate, and the Back Bay and the Prudential Center for Halladay.
"And one of my kidneys."
On former Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez:
"I wish Manny nothing but bigger man boobs and further ejections from Dodger games."
