Canada is on the ropes.

Saturday’s 81-74 loss to the Dominican Republic put the senior men’s basketball squad in a deep hole where qualifying for next year’s basketball world cup is concerned.

Canada did not give close to a good enough effort defensively, handled the ball like it was on fire at times and made extremely poor passes throughout.

“You can’t turn it over 16 times. We weren’t very good with our execution and that’s going to happen with a young team,” explained head coach Jay Triano afterward who also said the defence was the worst Canada has played at the FIBA Americas tournament in Venezuela yet.

Still, the game was a close one right up until the final minutes, when the Dominican was able to close it out.
