Naming Ottawa's pro basketball team

OTTAWA - Ottawa mayor Jim Watson is floored the city's new pro basketball team chose TomaHawks as its name out of the gate.

"Obviously they did not do the kind of consultation they should have done," Watson told reporters at City Hall Wednesday.

The National Basketball League of Canada team spoke with the mayor's office before the launch and Watson said he "strongly" suggested owners have proper consultations before deciding on TomaHawks. The team held a name and logo unveiling at City Hall Tuesday.

"That didn't happen and the issue blew up on them," Watson said.

Team owner Gus Takkale said he consulted with Aboriginal groups but couldn't provide a list on Tuesday.
