A trial date for next fall has been set for Howie Triano of Niagara Falls, the well-known retired teacher and basketball coach accused of sex offences.

Triano, 79, was charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference on Nov. 25, 2011.

Pre-trial motions were set Wednesday for Aug. 29 in the St. Catharines courthouse. The trial is scheduled for two days on Sept. 19 and 20.

Triano was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame in 1996 for playing on Canada’s national basketball team and in the world championships in 1958.

The Howie Triano Classic basketball tournament is held each year at A.N. Myer Secondary School in Niagara Falls and there is an athletic award named after him at Stamford Collegiate.

He’s the father of former Toronto Raptors coach Jay Triano.
