The Calgary Drillers have hit the buzzer-beater necessary to save their franchise.
The first-year American Basketball Association club found investors last night to provide around $150,000 needed to finish their 36-game season.
General manager Ruby Richman said another meeting is scheduled today to finalize the money transfer and sign the paperwork.
"The plan is to finish the season and work towards next season with them as owners," Richman said.
"They've been interested right from the beginning."
On Tuesday, the previous owner, Glen Straub of Florida, told president Al Howell to pull the plug on the team.
ABA chairman/co-founder Joe Newman put control of the club back in the hands of Richman and head coach Otis Hailey, who were originally awarded the expansion franchise.
Marred by a late-season start, the Drillers have suffered from poor attendance at the Stampede Corral but none of that deterred new investors, whom Richman refused to divulge last night.
