TORONTO - A lot of people — including this corner — thought the Florida Gators would finally break through and return to the Final Four this year.
A lot of people also thought Michigan was talented, but too young and inexperienced to make a long run.
So much for either of those notions.
Florida is out again — the third straight dismissal in the regional final for Billy Donovan’s gang — because Michigan found all kinds of holes in one of the nation’s stingiest defences that other teams had not been able to pierce.
Florida had held opponents to 37.9% shooting (30% from three) heading in, but Michigan shot 46.2% from the floor and a stellar 10-19 from outside (largely thanks to Mississauga’s Nik Stauskas).
Now, we’re left to wonder whether the Gators will ever get back to what once was familiar territory.
“We’ve almost become numb to it now. Been here before,” said Florida centre Patric Young rather matter of factly afterward."
