Two Canadians have led Gonzaga to a place the mid-major school has never been before: The top of college basketball’s rankings.

The Bulldogs, winners of 10 straight, surged to No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls on Monday, climbing the NCAA mountain for the first time ever.

Wins over Brigham Young and Portland over the weekend and a stunning loss by former No. 1 Indiana against Minnesota last week put Gonzaga over the top, with a 29-2 record that is the best in Division I.

To get to this point, the ‘Zags have needed an out-of-the-blue, monster year from Toronto-born, Kamloops-raised centre Kelly Olynyk and a strong sophomore campaign from Holland Landing’s Kevin Pangos.
