Brampton hoopster named NCAA Big 12 freshman of year

TORONTO - Three prominent members of the best Canadian crop of NCAA talent in history were honoured on Sunday.

Brampton’s Tristan Thompson a forward/centre for Texas and potential NBA lottery pick was named Big 12 freshman of the year, made the Big 12’s second all-star team and its all-freshman and all-defensive first teams.

Thompson led Texas in blocked shots (2.3 per game) and rebounding (7.7) while also scoring 13.5 points per game on 54% shooting.

His teammate and fellow freshman, Cory Joseph of Ajax also was named to the conference’s all-freshman squad. Joseph ran the Longhorns’ offence, contributing 10.5 points, 3.0 assists and a steal per game plus solid defence of his own for a team that surprisingly finished in the top 10 of the polls this season.

Meanwhile, Montreal’s Kris Joseph of Syracuse made the Big East’s third team.

The junior averaged 14.2 points. 1.5 steals and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Orange.
