It’s two days until the 2014 NBA draft and you get the distinct impression Masai Ujiri would give up a substantial portion of his bankroll to skip those days and just get at it right now.
“Still grinding it through,” a tired sounding Ujiri told a gaggle of cameras and reporters yesterday. “Just got upstairs and my guys gave me background reports on somebody that just came in and it throws you off a little bit, but that’s the nature of it.”
Ujiri and his staff have done their work. Some would suggest they’ve overdone it with more than 60 players in and out of Toronto in the past few weeks for workouts including six more yesterday.
But every time Ujiri thinks he has a handle on things, the information changes.
“Well, I just flew in this morning,” Ujiri began summing up the ever-changing nature of a draft. “I was walking in to the conference room where our guys were meeting and I was like ‘OK, no news that will throw me off right now.’”
