TORONTO - On a historic day for professional sports — and no, we’re not talking about Canada’s gold medal in hockey — Jason Collins return to the NBA as the first openly gay male professional was met with more of a shrug of indifference than any other reaction.

“I think it falls right in line with what our commissioner said,” Jacque Vaughn of Orlando Magic said. "This is a league that is inclusive and respectful. I think he said it best. Jason was one of the best teammates I ever had.”

Vaughn played with Collins in New Jersey from 2004 through 2006.

Collins is a veteran of 12 NBA seasons but has not played since last April. Shortly after that he came out in a Sports Illustrated exclusive. Collins had been out of basketball since. The Nets on Sunday signed him to a 10-day contract.

Raptors head coach Dwane Casey was a little more expansive on the subject than Vaughn.
