For a guy who has made his name winning NBA dunk contests (won one, shared another), there is a surprising amount of love for the defensive side of the game in Terrence Ross.

To label Ross solely a dunker would be a huge disservice. Yes, it put him on the NBA map, but he’s also become a decent three-point shooter, not to mention a willing and accomplished defender.

Case in point was the job he did on Kyrie Irving on Friday night. Ross wasn’t even supposed to be matched up with Irving but wound up guarding him on consecutive plays early in the game on switches.

The original plan was to have Ross on Jarrett Jack and Kyle Lowry on Irving until according to Ross, “I just told Kyle, let me guard him.’”

Lowry let the kid have his way and it wound up working out for everyone as Irving finished just 3-for-16 in a 98-91 Raptors win.

For Ross guarding the opponent’s best scorer or primary option on offence is a nice way to gauge his own game.
