TORONTO - The Raptors are quite used to life outside of the playoff picture, so they could have easily opted to tear things down to get into the Andrew Wiggins derby.
Much of the fanbase hoped and maybe still holds out hope that the franchise would go in that direction.
This is regarded as the best draft class since 2003, yet, new general manager Masai Ujiri said he wasnít just going to give players away. He refused to tear it all down and simply give away assets. Time will tell if that was the correct strategy, but the reigning executive of the year, regarded as one of the best in the business, probably isnít too concerned about what people think about what he has or hasnít done so far.
Meanwhile, it just so happens that because other teams have already all but given up on 2013-14, Ujiriís stand pat summer, along with his one big transaction so far ó the trade of Andrea Bargnani to New York ó could be enough to get the Raptors into the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08.
To paraphrase the soon-to-be reunited comedy duo of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, weíre saying thereís a chance.
