Rudy Gay assuming leadership role with Raptors

TORONTO - Rudy Gay came to town with an offensive resume, shot-making ability and reputation as being a closer.

He has lived up to the billing, but now comes an aspect that can’t be measured in any game-winning scenario or drawing a double team.

In today’s NBA game, leadership takes on many different forms, players are either willing or simply ill-equipped to handle the burden.

The Raptors find themselves in a situation where they need to get over the hump, psychologically more than any physical hurdle.

“I made it clear when I came here that I wanted to raise everyone’s level,’’ said Gay on Tuesday. “Everybody has to pick up their level for us to be a good team.”

While true, it’s also incumbent on Gay to lead.

He has to learn to play through bad calls, not settle for jumpers and attack the rim on nights when his shot isn’t dropping.

Do you like the new-look Raptors heading into the 2013-14 NBA season?
Yes, new GM made great moves
No, they will still be a terrible team
Unsure what to make of it
