DeMar DeRozan shines in Raptors win
By Ryan Wolstat, QMI Agency
DeMar DeRozan has been turning heads all season.
He turned a few more on Sunday, continuing his career year with a superb effort, leading the Raptors over the Magic 97-86.
DeRozan grabbed a season-best nine rebounds and added 20 points.
Thanks in large part to DeRozan, the Raptors responded to a blowout loss in Boston on Saturday with a strong start and a stronger finish.
Unlike what happened a day earlier in Boston – where the Raptors got buried by a Celtics barrage in the first – Toronto came out flying, taking a 10-point lead on the Magic.
DeRozan, showcasing his much-improved ball-handling skills and Andrea Bargnani, motivated and engaged after another off-game, lit up the Magic early.
Jose Calderon had another masterful outing at the point, coinributing 18 assists and Amir Johnson closed the deal with a 14-point explosion in the fourth that included only the fifth three-point make of his career.
The win was a team effort, with Ed Davis picking up a struggling Johnson in the first half and Dominic McGuire doing good work as the starting small forward.
Orlando hung around and overcame a 42.9% shooting first half and a 49-41 deficit to take a lead into the fourth.
Orlando outscored Toronto 28-21 in the third to take a two point lead into the fourth, but Johnson and Calderon combined well in the fourth to break down the Magic’s defence.
Mississauga’s Andrew Nicholson scored eight points and added three rebounds for Orlando.
