Raps' Dorsey looking for trust

WASHINGTON — Gaining trust in the NBA is done in small increments, particularly if you don’t have a huge body of work in the league to draw from.

Joey Dorsey is one of the Raptors in that boat.

He’s with his third team in the NBA and into his third year but a total of 18 games in those first two has meant gaining the trust of a new coach such as Jay Triano is a slow process.

Reggie Evans inadvertently opened the door a little for Dorsey when a flu-bug forced him to ask out of Saturday’s game in Miami. To Evans’ credit he wasn’t feeling much better the night before in Orlando and gave the Raptors more than 32 minutes against Dwight Howard and the Magic in one of the high-water marks of the season thus far for the Raps. Sick or not, Evans still pulled down 12 rebounds.

A night later in Miami and with just two minutes to go until tip-off, Evans informed Triano he couldn’t go.

He wasted an off-day in Miami in bed on Sunday and got out of bed Monday only to make the flight to Washington. He then spent the better part of Tuesday in Washington in another hotel bed.

For Dorsey that meant an opportunity and he made the most of it, pulling down 11 boards, and snagging three steals in just over 15 minutes in the loss in Miami.

“It’s like I told Sonny and DeMar,” Dorsey said. “I know I’m on a short leash so when I get out there I can’t have turnovers, I can’t mess up any plays or commit any fouls that are going to make the coach not have trust in me,” Dorsey said.

“That’s the biggest thing I have been trying to do since I got in the league,” he said. “Gain the trust of every coach I have played for. I am trying to gain that trust with Jay so when he puts me out there I got a little longer leash. I hope that Miami game has spread it out a little bit.”

Triano came away impressed with Dorsey’s play on Saturday but with Evans out of his sick bed Tuesday afternoon and willing to make a go of it, he was back in the starting lineup.

That pushed Amir Johnson to backup. Unless one of them falters, minutes again are going to be hard to come by for Dorsey.

But at least if the opportunity does come up, Dorsey has shown Triano that he can fill the role without reservation.
