VANCOUVER -- There were no moving vans or instructions to board a flight for Memphis this time for Scott Roth.

Toronto's newest assistant coach, a guy who played in the league and has been associated with the game for a quarter of a century, is familiar with Vancouver having served as an assistant for the Grizzlies.

"It's my first time back," Roth said following Tuesday's workout. "When I heard about training camp being here I was very excited to come back to see the changes that happened because of the Winter Olympics."

The Grizzlies relocated to Memphis in 2001.

For Roth, his first and only year in Vancouver was spent entirely on basketball and not getting caught up in the politics and finances.

"Much like the fans, we were up in the air, not knowing if we were coming or going," he said. "We went month to month not knowing if we'd be in Vancouver next year, but you just do your job.

"I certainly enjoyed my time here."

One of Roth's tasks on Jay Triano's staff is to work with the team's young core and help Triano as a sounding board.
