Back to back losses. Must be time for a Raptors point guard controversy, right?

And in the mostly me-first NBA, barely an eyebrow would be raised if that were in fact the case.

But in Toronto where the only point guard controversy would have to match Jose Calderon against Jarrett Jack, even the word controversy gets caught in ones throat when discussing the possibility.

First off, neither do controversy well, if at all. Its not in their nature.

Calderon began the year as the starter but has been coming off the bench since returning from a hip injury that cost him 10 consecutive games. In those 10 games, with Jack starting, the Raps went a solid 7-3.

Calderon has been back for four games now - two wins and two losses - and while hes not making any noise about getting his starting gig back, it has been a topic of discussion in the media and among fans on blog boards.

This from Calderon Wednesday on the possibility of re-assuming the starting role that he lost with the injury.

Jay Trianos call, always, Calderon said. Hes the coach. Its not about minutes or starting. We just have to win. If he decides to put me in, then Ill be happy to help the team at the beginning, but it doesnt matter. Whatever he decides is good with me.

That was Calderons position when the same question was raised with T.J. Ford two years ago and as far as hes concerned nothing has changed. Calderon has always been team first, individual second.

Moments later Jack was asked how he would react if Friday night in New York Jay Triano suddenly decided to run Calderon out with the starting unit and have Jack come on as his relief.

Im used to it, Jack said. If it happens, it happens. Its sure not going to change the mentality I have had over the past 15 years or so. Im still going to be aggressive. Im still going to come in and be the energy guy.

Jack takes much the same approach to the game as Calderon. Whatever coach feels works best for the team, hes on board with.

Whatever happens, happens, Jack said. I know coach does a great job of managing the game and hes going to go with whoever he feels comfortable playing at that particular point. Whoever is on the floor, if Im not there with them, I will support them as much as I can.

So what about it Jay Triano? Are you giving any thought to starting with Calderon Friday night in New York.

I havent thought about it yet, Triano said adding that if he did consider a change it would be because the chemistry was not there.

But in the next breath Triano dismisses that notion too.

Weve been playing pretty good basketball, so I dont think theres any reason to shuffle the deck right now, he said.

In the four games since his return from injury Calderon is averaging 24 minutes, nine points five assists and just more than a turnover a game.

Jack, meanwhile is averaging 30.5 minutes with 11 points, five assists and just over two turnovers a game over the same period.

Theres not a lot to choose between the two from a statistical standpoint so it likely comes down to a Triano hunch or a matchups decision if or when the current rotation is to change.

Just dont expect any controversy from any of the three parties involved.
