A good chance Bosh is gone

If there was any doubt before, there is almost none now: This will be Chris Bosh's last season with the Toronto Raptors.

And if you were him, why would you stay with the Raptors? What would motivate you to remain with a team that, again, isn't anywhere close to being a contender?

The Raptors had to build around Bosh. That was the promise. They had to find a way not to squander Bosh's talents. They had to turn loser into winner, or at least begin developing something with promise, something to believe in.

General manager Bryan Colangelo has not done that. Coach Jay Triano has not done that. The other Raptors players have not done that.

Bosh is not LeBron James or Dwyane Wade or Kobe Bryant. He doesn't win games on his own. He needs help around him, especially in the fourth quarter. He is a very good NBA player, not a LeBron-Kobe player for the ages.

Very good for the rest of this, his seventh season in Toronto. Not good enough to stay for another season going nowhere.

This and that

A four-year look at John Ferguson on draft day with the Maple Leafs: 2004 -- traded his first pick for Brian Leetch; 2005 -- drafted Tuukka Rask, whom he traded for Andrew Raycroft; 2006 -- drafted Jiri Tlusty, traded away Thursday; 2007 -- traded his first pick for Vesa Toskala. Some legacy ... Forget Leaf Nation. New name for the place: Ablation Nation ... After Jonas Gustavsson's procedure on Friday the Leafs announced that his surgery was successful. Just wondering: Has a team ever announced that surgery was unsuccessful? ... Alexander Mogilny is so enjoying life in retirement he looks like he could play Santa at your local mall ... Two years ago, when you asked Phil Kessel a question, he looked down at his shoes (skates) before answering in a mumble. Now, eye contact. Now, almost clear words. That's called growing comfortable with yourself. Also called growing up ... Brian Burke's next free-agent acquisition should be the Montreal Canadiens' director of ceremony. The only thing the Habs do better than anyone else anymore is ceremony. Otherwise, there's not a single Hall of Famer in their future ... Some things just make me smirk, like Jason Spezza on the NHL's competition committee.

Hear and there

The telling numbers on Andrea (MoPete) Bargnani: He scores 40% more points at home than he does on the road and brings down almost 50% more rebounds at home than he does away. If you're Bosh, and you're out there busting your butt under the basket, home and away, this has to drive you nuts ... Sunday essay question. Last season, Pavel Kubina, minus-15. This season, Kubina, plus-16. Please explain in detail ... Strange stuff: After the Flyers fired coach John Stevens, there were at least two reports in Philadelphia indicating that Mike Richards had stepped down as captain to pass the 'C' to Chris Pronger. Reports later denied by everybody but a whole lot more than coaching isn't right in Philadelphia ... On too many nights this season, Hedo Turkoglu has been He Don't with the Raptors ... Department of Duh: Hines Ward calling out his quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, for not playing with a concussion. Somebody -- why not Keith Ballard -- needs to smack that man across the head and wake him up to the sporting world's new reality.

Scene and heard

When he was voted to the West all-star team, Saskatchewan linebacker Sean Lucas said: "I'm happy I got recognition this year." Wonder how happy he was to get recognition as the 13th man on the field in the Riders' Grey Cup defeat ... If there aren't 13 men on the field, does Damon Duval become the Canadian version of Scott Norwood? ... Things that make my eyes glaze over: Salary cap rules; Harry Potter movies; Soccer; Any discussion that uses the word escrow ... Argos president Bob Nicholson said there have been no discussions yet about the futures of coach Bart Andrus and GM Adam Rita. And if what Nicholson says is true, even with the Argos ownership in flux, he deserves to be fired right along with them ... One of the best players at the U.S. Olympic hockey camp, David Backes, has been one of the worst players for the St. Louis Blues ... If you're Marcus Banks and you're being paid $4.55 million US not to play for the Raptors, are you a) angry; b) feeling just a little guilty; c) thinking this is the greatest gig ever ... A reality we all have to deal with: The Captain was nothing without Tennille ... "Only two things can stop Tiger," legendary golf writer Dan Jenkins wrote in 2001. "Injury or a bad marriage." ... Not only did Gregg Zaun hit the jackpot with a $2-million-plus contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, but they want him to start at catcher and he gets a $250,000 buyout if they don't keep him in 2011. Sure they have the right guy?

And another thing

I drove to the store for milk yesterday morning. First time I can say I outdrove Tiger Woods ... And from now on, when they talk about a bad lie, it will take on all kinds of proportions for Tiger ... Now that Sidney Crosby is busting his way back toward the scoring title in the NHL, he has to be considered the favourite for Canada's athlete of the year ... Shouldn't the Roar of the Rings Olympic curling showdown be called the Roar of the Rinks? ... If you read coach Triano's body language when talking about back-to-back games, you wonder why the Raptors even bother to show up. You don't hear any of this whining in any other sport, just the NBA ... Losing Marco Scutaro will be a good thing for the Blue Jays only if the Red Sox don't sign a more expensive free agent than him. If they do, the draft picks received by the Jays diminish in value ... The new backup goalie with the New York Rangers: Chad Johnson ... Lawrence Frank, fired by the New Jersey Nets, is a much better coach than a lot of guys now running NBA teams ... Umaga, real name Eddie Fatu, another wrestler dead so young. He was just 36 ... Happy birthday to David Defiagbon (38), Larry Bowa (64), Nick Bockwinkel (75), Steven Wright (54) and Jelani McCoy (31) ... And hey, whatever became of Guy Trottier?
