ORLANDO -- It's not a bad life when you wake up in the plush comfort of the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes and put your head down on the pillows at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Central Park in Manhattan some 15 hours later as the Raptors did last night.
But while the quality of the Raptors' hotels over the course of a season certainly is something to be envied, the frequency with which they visit them is not.
How about 91 nights in a bed that isn't your own over the course of six months?
Forget the packing and unpacking. Try filling what amounts to almost 1,100 hours of down time in between shootarounds and games.
Some, such as Jose Calderon, use the time to update their personal blogs.
"I don't really have time when we're in Toronto," the point guard says. "So, when I'm on the road, I spend a lot of time answering e-mails."
Joey Graham is a movie buff and, while there is always the option of watching them from the comfort of his own room, he prefers to head out to a local theatre to take in the newest releases. For the first half of the season the trio of Graham, Jamario Moon, and Jermaine O'Neal would set aside a few hours to hit the flicks. The Shawn Marion deal with Miami sent both his movie-going buddies to South Beach, but that hasn't changed Graham's routine.
"We were like the three amigos but after they left I've been going by myself," Graham said. "The hotel gets cramped and stuffy. Every road trip, I have seen one or two movies since I came into the league."
Being the most recognizable Raptor, meanwhile, does not keep Chris Bosh chained to the hotel. "Never, ever, ever," he says when asked about being reluctant to venture out in public. "If I want to go somewhere, I go."
The married guys on the team, particularly those with kids, have no trouble taking care of the downtime.
"I really don't like to be too active when I'm away because at home in Toronto with the kids I'm doing all that stuff," guard Anthony Parker said.
Not exactly the lifestyles of a rock star -- even if they do frequent some of the same hotels.
