Pops battles sore knee

The Raptors were lacking some pop last night when energetic forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu was scratched just prior to tipoff.

Mensah-Bonsu is nursing a sore right knee and is being listed as day to day.

The Raptors signed Mensah-Bonsu for the balance of the season on March 6.

On most nights, Mensah-Bonsu gives the Raptors energy, rebounding and defence.

The knock on Mensah-Bonsu is that he can't knock down shots consistently enough to stick around the NBA, but he has nonetheless made an impression in Toronto following stops in Dallas and San Antonio.

Given how thin Toronto's roster has become, Mensah-Bonsu is arguably the best coming off the bench, at least when it comes to injecting life.

One can argue he's also the top reserve in terms of rebounding and defending, which doesn't say much about the other non-starters.

Against the visiting Bucks, the Raptors had three bigs available in the form of Jake Voskuhl, who started on Sunday for an injured Andrea Bargnani, Patrick O'Bryant and Nathan Jawai, not exactly what one would consider as the Big three.

Jawai was recalled from the D-League and practised with the Raptors on Tuesday.

O'Bryant receives minutes only in garbage time.

New kid on the block

No one in their wildest dreams could have envisioned a scenario where Bargnani leads a team in blocks.

At the same time, no one could foresee the train wreck that has unfolded in Raptorland.

In that context, anything is possible.

With his next block, Bargnani will lead the team in blocks.

Jermaine O'Neal led the Raptors with 82 rejections before he was dealt to Miami.
