Sam Mitchell has a message for Raptors fans.

"Tell everyone to calm down," Mitchell said last night. "Yes, my agent (Lonnie Cooper) and Bryan (Colangelo) are talking. But nothing has been done. They're talking, and I told Lonnie to call me when the deal is done."

Mitchell added that he is "hopeful" that a new deal will be announced perhaps as early as next week.

"I'm always asked if I want to stay in Toronto, and I always answer, of course I want to stay in Toronto," he said. "What am I supposed to say?"

"This is a process," the 2007 NBA coach of the year added. "(Washington coach) Eddie Jordan took a while to get his contract extension. It wasn't done in two days. These things take time."

Mitchell said he is actually encouraged that the Raptors have refused to let the Indiana Pacers talk to him about a deal, even though, from a negotiation point of view, it's always good to have one offer weighed against another.

"If (Colangelo) said yes (to Indiana), that would make me feel like he didn't want me," Mitchell said.

Mitchell guided the Raptors to a 47-35 record this season, a 20-game improvement from 2005-06 .
