Garbo antsy, already

Jorge Garbajosa was released from hospital yesterday and in pretty good spirits according to assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini.

The Raps' starting small forward actually wanted to check himself out of hospital on Tuesday night -- some eight or nine hours following surgery -- but doctors convinced him he still needed to take in some antibiotics and therefore should at least stay the night.

Garbajosa suffered a displaced left ankle joint with ligament tear and a fractured fibula on Monday night in Boston as he attempted to block an Al Jefferson shot from behind. Gherardini, who knows Garbajosa as well as anyone on the Raptors outside of perhaps Jose Calderon, said the biggest problem the Raptors will face from here on out will be holding Garbajosa back from pushing things too quickly for his own good.

"I have had a few Garbo years under the belt, so I know that will be the problem because he's such a fierce competitor in ever thing he does," Gherardini said. "He is not going to accept the fact mentally that he is injured and we're going to have a tough time making him understand that he is injured. He's like that.

"Somehow, we need to get across to Jorge that he has to slow down and take it one step at a time," Gherardini said. "He is feeling better hour by hour."

ROAD TO RECOVERY

Raptors medical director Dr. Paul Marks stopped by the ACC prior to last night's game to shed a little more light on what is in store for Garbajosa over the next six months or so.

Marks said Garbajosa had two 60-mm screws inserted in his ankle as part of the surgery that lasted a total of an hour and a half and he will probably be walking three months from now. He will need at least another three months of rehab before he's ready to play.

UNDER THE WEATHER

Coach Sam Mitchell, perhaps in keeping with the run of injury luck his team has been having lately, was under the weather a little himself yesterday.

Mitchell started feeling ill Tuesday while visiting with Garbajosa. He skipped yesterday's shootaround and while he still wasn't ready to try any solid foods just yet, showed up for last night's game.
