Ford can't shake pain

T.J. Ford's is the very definition of the day-to-day injury.

On Monday, Ford practised with the team and felt very good. There was no pain in the ankle that has had him in street clothes the past four games. All signs pointed toward a return for tonight's game against Washington.

But yesterday, the pain and discomfort were back, forcing Ford to take a wait-and-see attitude.

"We'll see (today) after shootaround," a subdued Ford said following practice about a possible return to the court tonight.

KEEP 'EM BUSY

Starters for the rookie/sophomore portion of all-star weekend will be announced today, and chances are both Andrea Bargnani and Jorge Garbajosa will be heading to Las Vegas in a few weeks, joining starting power forward all-star Chris Bosh.

Normally, a coach wouldn't mind his players taking the four days off and resting, but Sam Mitchell says he's all for the idea of Bargnani and Garbajosa going.

"The good thing is they're going to be doing a lot of stuff off the court, but they're also going to get to run up and down the court, too," Mitchell said.

The coach's concern is more for the players who will not be doing anything for four consecutive days.

GAGA OVER GILBERT

Much of yesterday's post-practice interviews with the media concerned Wizards all-star guard Gilbert Arenas and how he can be stopped.

The answer is you can't.

"What do you take away from him?" Anthony Parker asked. "He can shoot two feet behind the three-point line and he can finish in the paint."

Arenas has been extremely vocal about making any of those he felt responsible for denying him a spot on this past summer's USA Basketball world championship team pay.

Assistants Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan, head coaches with Phoenix and Portland respectively, already have payed the price, with Arenas scoring 50-plus against both those clubs.

Parker said he was pretty sure Arenas doesn't have any beefs with any of the Raptors.

"I think we're safe ... at least I hope we are."
