Ford: New ball lacks bounce

Add T.J. Ford to the growing list of players grumbling about the new NBA basketball.

The Raptors point guard said he is "not a fan" of the oft-criticized synthetic ball. It has forced Ford to make subtle, unwanted changes to his fast-paced game.

"I think it changes the little things," Ford said. "You can't throw as many bounce passes as you normally would. Once it hits the floor, it kind of takes some of the force off of it a little bit.

"I don't think you'll see too many bounce passes in these pre-season games."

Stars like Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash have given negative reviews to the ball, which is sticky when dry and slippery when wet. Despite all the complaints, NBA commissioner David Stern suspects players will adjust to the ball and does not plan to go back to the long-used leather ball.

"It feels like a street basketball," Ford said. "It doesn't float like the other (leather) ball. When it hits the floor, it kind of takes some of the force of it. It doesn't slide like the other ball did."
