Martin's 'number' not up

Darrick Martin may look like a modern-day player/coach, but the little-used Raptors point guard is not ready to join the coaching ranks just yet.

The UCLA product, who has played well when called upon and has been an outstanding mentor for his teammates when not on the floor, said he has no plans to coach in the near future.

"I have a number (when he wants to stop playing)," said Martin, who turned 35 on March 6.

"I can't tell you (the number), but not real soon. I'd like to play a little longer. It's something I'd like to do later on down the road. My approach in life is I like to be focused on the task at hand. I think if you multi-task too much, it doesn't allow you to be good in one specific area."

Martin said many people have asked him when he wants to coach.

"I have friends and different people that throw the coaching bug around for me and I give them a quick answer and kind of walk away," the personable NBA veteran said.

Martin put up his first double-double since 1999 in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, but then played just six minutes the next night as most of his minutes went to newly signed 10-day point guard Andre Barrett.

That's just fine with Martin, who never complains and simply enjoys all the opportunities he receives.

"Whenever I feel I can't continue to do that (play productive minutes), whether I have an opportunity to play or not, I'll walk away from the game," Martin said. "As long as I can do that, I'll continue to play. When I can't do it, I'll rejoice in being daddy (to his five-year-old daughter)."

SUPPORT FOR HOME TEAM

Toronto-born centre Jamaal Magloire of the Milwaukee Bucks praised the Raptors for hiring Bryan Colangelo as their general manager.

"He's a very good GM," Magloire said before a game against the Raptors last night at the Air Canada Centre. "I admired him from afar (when Colangelo was with) Phoenix. I think it's a great new beginning for the Raptors. They have a lot to be optimistic about with him being the GM of this team."
