Bosh all but headed for all-star game

The wait all but ended yesterday for Chris Bosh.

On the eve of the introduction of the reserves for the NBA all-star game, a report in the New York Daily News said the Raptors forward will be named to the East all-star team tonight (7 p.m.) on the nationally televised NBA broadcast on TNT.

As soon as the report hit the Internet, the third-year star's cell phone started ringing off the hook.

"I heard about it," Bosh said on a day when fans received bobblehead dolls of his likeness at the Air Canada Centre. "I've been getting text messages and phone calls all day telling me about the rumours."

THIRD RAPTOR

Bosh will be in Charlotte with the Raptors when the NBA finalizes the rosters for the Feb. 19 all-star game in Houston tonight. Assuming the NBA does the expected, Bosh will become the third player in Raptors history to receive the honour, following Vince Carter and Antonio Davis.

Bosh narrowly missed making it in his second year last season when many felt the team's poor record hindered his bid. But even with the team doing worse this season, Bosh's numbers are just too good to overlook.

He is 15th in the league in scoring, averaging 22.9 points, and pulls down 9.2 rebounds per game.

"It means a lot," Bosh said of a possible selection. "It means (being one of) the best players in the NBA at that time. Everything is happening pretty fast for me. I'm really ready to take that next step and see what happens (tonight).

"It (an all-star selection) is confirmation (he is one of the top players in the league). I can believe in my heart all I want to. When other people start to recognize you for the good things you've done, it really makes it that much more special."

With the all-star game in Houston, the Dallas native probably will be bombarded with ticket requests. But he has a message for long-lost relatives looking for tickets.

"It won't be an issue because I can say no easy," he said.

Bosh described last night as being like Christmas Eve.

Tonight, he should receive the best belated Christmas gift of his life.
