73 'better' than 81?

If David Thompson could go back in time and revisit April 9, 1978, the ex-Denver Nuggets star would put a three-point line on the court.

That way, Thompson, who scored 73 points that night, could see if he could match or tie Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant's 81 from Sunday against the Raptors.

Speaking to Denver reporters Monday, Thompson wasn't shy in comparing the big games.

"I think my game was better," Thompson told the Rocky Mountain News. "I shot a way better percentage than (Bryant) did. I didn't have three-pointers and I was playing against better defenders."

Thompson was 28-for-38 from the field and made 17 of 20 free throws in a no-defence 139-137 stat-fest loss against the Detroit Pistons on the final day of the 1977-78 season. Bryant was 28-for-46 from the field and 18 of 20 from the line. He was 7-for-13 from beyond the arc.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION

When Pape Sow was called up from the D-League last week, Raptors coach Sam Mitchell didn't think he would have any playing time for the second-year forward/centre. But with Rafael Araujo nursing a shoulder injury, Sow has played in the past three games and has performed admirably in limited minutes.

Sow tied a career-high with nine points against the Nuggets in a 107-101 loss Monday, though he did commit five fouls. He showed some offensive touch, drawing fouls and wasn't totally lost on defence.

"We just tried to get him some minutes," Mitchell said. "We had some injuries. I thought he did some things defensively and brought a little energy."

HELLO BIG BROTHER

Chicago Bulls forward Stephen Graham, signed to a 10-day contract last week after he was released by the Houston Rockets last month, will face his older twin brother, Joey, for the second time in the NBA tonight when the Raptors play host to the Bulls. But there is a good chance the brothers won't be on the floor at the same time. Mitchell didn't use the struggling Joey Graham on Monday and Stephen has had several games where he has not played.
