Rose rumours persist

The Jalen Rose rumours continue to swirl.

The New York Post reported yesterday that the Raptors and New York Knicks could be closing in on a long-rumoured deal that would send the ever-improving Rose and the Denver Nuggets' first-round pick this year (likely protected) for the expiring contract of Penny Hardaway.

There is another rumour floating out there linking the teams to a multiple-player, pick deal. Knicks forward Trevor Ariza's name has been mentioned and New York could have interest in Raptors point guard Mike James, who is playing the best basketball of his career.

"Really since the Vince Carter trade, the reality of it is ... would an established veteran really relate to being on a team that's actively rebuilding," Rose said. "From that, along with my salary and age, it's just a foregone conclusion by a lot of people (he will be traded). Nobody has really come out and said anything against it from our organization. It just has been a foregone conclusion that Jalen will eventually be traded.

"I don't know how much truth or not truth there is to that. Of course, I want to be on a winning team. Of course, I want to try to (go) for a championship one day. When I got a chance to taste it in 2000, there's nothing like it. Not individual acclaim. Hopefully, that (a championship) is in my future, but it's not up to me to determine that."

Does Rose think a trade will go down?

"I understand sometimes where there's smoke there's fire," he said.

"A lot of the deals that really get discussed are the deals that don't happen. I just try to be a pro about it. If it's meant to be, it's going to happen.

" I understand that, everybody in the know understands that."

INTERESTING ADVICE

Rose was asked if he gives any tips to younger teammates in advance of a game against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, the opposition for the Raptors last night.

"I tell young guys to take a nap before the game, have a good pre-game and pray a lot and just hope he misses," Rose said with a smile.
