Peterson more versatile

Morris Peterson's offensive contributions are on the rise and a big part of the reason is the constant harping of assistant coach Alex English.

"With me being such a good three-point shooter, a lot of times I would have guys flying out at me and being so confident, I would still try to shoot the ball right over them.

"Now I'm letting them go past me, pump-fake with one dribble and taking the ball tot he basket more." And for that he has English to thank.

"That's something I have done in the past and kind of got away from it but it's also something coach English has been on me about every day. 'Morris, pump-fake, one dribble in the lane'. "He's been pounding that into my head and I think I'm starting to listen to him."

Peterson, who ranks eighth in the NBA in three-point field goals made, is averaging 13.4 points a game but in five December games is averaging 17.2 ppg.

"When I do that, it opens up my game more," Peterson said of his willingness to drive the lane. "Now those guys don't know what I'm going to do. In the past, they knew I was going to take the three-point shot."

RUMOUR CENTRAL

This from Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune.

(Chris) Bosh probably would be the most sought-after player because most around the NBA don't believe he'll re-sign after his contract is up in 2007. Lakers coach Phil Jackson last week even wondered aloud about Bosh, said to be a Lakers' target when he's a free agent. But Toronto needs players on contracts, not cap room. Wonder if they'd take a No. 1, Tyson Chandler and Ben Gordon? It would be worth it also to take back Rose or any of their Williamses to get Bosh, who's going to be a major star."

That nugget, relayed to Sam Mitchell and a number of media types after practice yesterday, elicited the expected guffaws.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE

"I smile a lot and raise hell with the referees but I won't be able to do that here because Sam will be mad at me," -- Recently signed Purdue coaching legend Gene Keady on his new role with the Raptors.
