COSTAMESA, Calif. -- Matt Bonner may not play in the summer leagues with the Raptors, but the restricted free agent is doing everything he can to remain in Toronto.

The Red Rocket, talking on the phone from his home in New Hampshire, said he is optimistic things will work out with the Raptors. No players can sign until July 22, but teams can talk with players now.

"Toronto has enough room under the cap to sign me," Bonner said. "I hope it gets done soon. I want to be a Toronto Raptor for a long time.

"I've waited 25 years for this and I've worked hard to get to this point and sign a long-term deal. If I have to wait a few days, it's not going to kill me."

Bonner's agent, Kenny Grant, said he has not talked to any other teams. While the forward was on the Raptors' original summer league roster, Bonner said it is "unlikely" he will join the team in Los Angeles or Minnesota. Bonner was not listed on the updated summer league roster yesterday. He is, however, maintaining a strict workout regiment in New Hampshire.

"It's not like I'm sitting here on the beach," he said. "I'm working hard. I'm swimming, biking, running, hiking."

Another restricted free agent from the Raptors, forward Pape Sow, decided to join the team here yesterday.

"We're just talking," Raptors general manager Rob Babcock said of negotiations with Sow. "Nothing is solidified ... He wants to play."

Meanwhile, it is doubtful rookie point guard Roko Ukic of Croatia, a second round pick, will play in the summer leagues.

Ukic, who remains on the roster, has to negotiate a buyout with his Croatian team before he can sign with the Raptors.

"There's still a lot of work to do," Babcock said.

Babcock also said yesterday he has talked with the agent of free agent guard Antonio Daniels.

A Seattle Sonic last season, Daniels is being pursued by several teams.
