Magloire deal wasn't close

Rob Babcock never came close to trading Vince Carter for a package including Toronto native Jamaal Magloire.

Responding to a report stating the New Orleans Hornets centre could be a Raptor today, Babcock said yesterday financial obstacles made a trade impossible.

"We pursued every single thing we could on the Vince Carter trade," said Babcock, who eventually shipped Carter to the New Jersey Nets. "We did our full homework and we could not have done a deal with New Orleans."

Because Magloire is in the base-year of his contract, only half of his salary ($8.53 million US) would have counted in any trade. Carter's salary is more than $12 million.

"There was not a deal that could be made there, simple as that," Babcock said.

Babcock wouldn't talk about the possibility of acquiring Magloire one day, saying he could not comment on a player under contract with another team.
