Rose wants stardom

During a training-camp interview at Brock University in St. Catharines last October, Raptors swingman Jalen Rose declared that one of his goals was to play in the all-star game this season.

The complete rosters for the Feb. 20 all-star game in Denver were announced yesterday, and to the surprise of few -- Rose included -- he was passed over.

"I've been on a team in Indiana where we had the best overall record in the league, I was leading the team in scoring, and I still didn't make the all-star team," said Rose, whose clutch late-game performances lately have solidified his position as a fan favourite in Toronto. "And I've been on a team in Chicago where I was one of the top five or six people in scoring in the league, and I didn't make the all-star team on a bad team. So the only way I'm going to make it is if my team goes 82-0 and I'm playing pretty good."

Even though Rose has done some media work at major NBA events in the past, he said he is not going to attend the all-star weekend.

"I'm boycotting until I'm in a uniform," Rose said.

CAVS STUFF

Former Raptor Jerome Moiso currently is on a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who played host to the Raptors last night. Asked if he might stick around in Cleveland, Moiso shrugged and said, "I don't know - that's up to them." ... Cavs star LeBron James remained coy yesterday with regard to his potential participation in the all-star slam-dunk contest. "I'll tell you the same thing I said (the day before): Game-time decision," he said.

NUMBERS LIE

Raptors coach Sam Mitchell couldn't vote for any of his own players, but he did cast a ballot for the seven Eastern all-star reserves. "I don't just look at (individual) numbers, I look at how the team is playing," Mitchell said. "If your team isn't playing well, that has to count against you a little bit. Not in all circumstances -- you can just be on a bad team. But if you are, you had better be out there scratching and clawing every night. If you're just shooting and putting up numbers, that doesn't mean that much to me."
