Shoes make the man

Chris Bosh needs to enroll in shoe-wearing 101.

The Raptors forward wore brand new shoes last night against the New York Knicks at the Air Canada Centre and seemed to have trouble with his footing. After he slipped in the second quarter, Raptors coach Sam Mitchell yelled to the bench, "Go get Chris some real shoes."

Somebody did and Bosh changed shoes, putting on a used pair, during a timeout.

"He put on some new shoes he had never practiced or wore in a game before," Mitchell said. "When you play basketball and you change the style of shoe you've been wearing, it gives you a different grip and a different feel. Normally, you practice in it first. It seems like a little thing, but he fell down three times in the first quarter.

"We just felt like he had not had a chance chance to get comfortable with those shoes. I knew that cause I've made that mistake before. (Kevin Garnett) made that mistake one time and he threw his shoes into the stands."

P WORDS

In the Raptors dressing room, there is a blown-up quote from senior advisor to the general manager Wayne Embry, which states, "I'm a big believer in words that begin with the letter P. Perseverance. Persistence. Preparation. Pass. Pride."

Playoffs, another P word, is not included in Embry's statement and that probably pleases Mitchell, who refuses to talk about post-season possibilities with the media.

"There are a lot of words that start with P in the dictionary," Mitchell said. "Whichever word you're referring to, hopefully it's a good word or a nice word. If it means play game tonight, I agree with you wholeheartedly."

SUPER SUB

Raptors media relations co-ordinator Mike Cvitkovic might be in the running for the NBA's sixth man award.

Cvitkovic, who filled in for a late-arriving anthem singer earlier this season, took the place of ailing public address announcer Herbie Kuhn last night. It was the first game Kuhn, battling a viral infection, has missed at the Air Canada Centre. He missed two games at the SkyDome.
