Raptors coach Sam Mitchell denied dissing Vince Carter on a Toronto radio show yesterday.

Mitchell's statements were interpreted in some circles as suggesting that Carter did not play as hard for the Raptors as he is now for New Jersey.

"I didn't say that," Mitchell said. "I said Vince asked to be traded and ... maybe his heart wasn't totally committed to being a Toronto Raptor."

Raptors guard Jalen Rose did express surprise that Carter's numbers in Jersey are vastly superior than they were in Toronto.

"Well, he's still the same person, he still has the same social security number, so he definitely had it in him," Rose said. "I guess New Jersey is putting him a situation to succeed."

HELPING OUT

Rose will join up with other NBA players represented by the SFX Sports Agency to help raise money for the victims of the recent tsunami and earthquake in South Asia. For every point one of the seven SFX players scores in a designated game, $1,000 will be donated to help out the 1.5 million children affected by the disaster. Rose's chance will come tomorrow against Milwaukee at the ACC. Other stars involved include Kobe Bryant of the L.A. Lakers, Tracy McGrady of the Houston Rockets and Jermaine O'Neal of the Indiana Pacers ... Volunteers will be stationed throughout the ACC tomorrow and on Sunday to accept donations for the disaster victims via the Canadian Red Cross.

QUICK HITS

According to the New York Post, Toronto's Donyell Marshall may follow Carter to New Jersey. The Nets are also said to be interested in two other big men, Joe Smith and PJ Brown ... Carter caps are now 60% off the list price at the ACC ... Former Raptor Doug Christie and his wife Jackie have one of the most unique marriages in the history of sport and now they plan to reveal considerably more about the personal lives in a proposed reality show that is in negotiations with music network VH1.
