Allen has fun with rumours

A large photo on the NBA's website yesterday showed Seattle SuperSonics star Ray Allen uttering a few words in the direction of a seemingly disinterested Vince Carter.

"Hey Vince, did you hear I was named Player of the Week? Vince? Vince!," said the humourous caption accompanying the image, which was located in the "Click and Roll" section of nba.com

In case Carter didn't get the message the first time, he'll get another opportunity tonight when Allen's high-flying Sonics take on Vin-sanity's Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre.

That is, if Carter still is a Raptor by tipoff.

With trade rumours involving Carter heating up again yesterday, the ensuing buzz of a possible trade conjured up reminders of the off-season scuttlebutt involving a Carter-for-Allen deal.

Whether those reports were valid or not, the Sonics must be relieved things remained status quo.

CATALYST

While Carter's early season struggles are well documented, Allen has been the catalyst of the Sonics' surprising 8-1 start.

Through the first three weeks of the NBA season, Allen ranks first in field goals made (82); first in three-pointers made (31); third in points (233), third in minutes played (354); third in three-point field goal percentage (.564); and seventh in average points per game (25.9).

Seattle's 79-68 victory over the New Jersey Nets Wednesday marked the first time Allen was held to under 20 points this season.

"It was a relief," Allen told reporters after his 14-point performance. "We barely got by."

Allen, the sharp-shooting guard out of the University of Connecticut, becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. While reports out of Seattle suggest the two sides are not close to a new deal, Allen has stated he would like to remain a Sonic.

In the meantime, Raptor fans can only dream of what it would have been like to see Allen decked out in Toronto purple.
