Raptors ponder moves
By BILL HARRIS, TORONTO SUN
The last cut is the deepest. Perhaps that's why the Raptors are taking so long to decide if they'll keep the full complement of 15 players to start this season -- 12 on the active roster and three on the injured list -- or make some more cuts.
The Raptors currently have 15 players on the roster, so technically they don't have to cut anyone .
However, having an open roster spot, or two, would create some flexibility with regard to any future trades or additions.
"We're still considering some things," Raptors general manager Rob Babcock said yesterday.
NBA teams have to inform the league of their final roster decisions by tomorrow, at 6 p.m., Eastern time.
The Raptor who would appear to be the most vulnerable is rookie forward Pape Sow, although the club also could decide to release either Milt Palacio or Roger Mason Jr., both of whom are vying to be the primary backup to starting point guard Rafer Alston. Palacio's contract is fully guaranteed, but Mason's is not.
"We're not 100% sure yet," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said.
COME ONE, COME ALL
The Raptors will hold an open practice today on the main court of the Air Canada Centre. Doors open to the public at 11:30 a.m., with the festivities set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
The event is expected to be more interactive, involving fans and the Raptors players, than it has been in past years. As usual, the club will hold a regular practice in private beforehand, since the logistics of an open practice don't lend themselves to serious basketball work.
