Vince to sit this one out

No Vince Carter, no Alvin Williams and a whole lot of Jerome Moiso.

That delightful scenario will play out tonight at the Air Canada Centre when the Raptors play host to Italian League club Benetton Treviso in an exhibition game.

Raptors coach Sam Mitchell plans to rest the healthy Carter, while Williams remains sidelined with a chronically sore right knee after skipping practice yesterday to see head team physician and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Marks.

Moiso, who did not play in a loss against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, will start at centre. Loren Woods, one of three candidates competing for the centre spot as the team attempts to keep Chris Bosh at power forward, started for the Raptors in their first two pre-season games.

LEAVE THEM

"The guys on the floor, if it's their time to be on the floor, we're going to leave them on the floor," Mitchell said. "We've got guys competing for minutes and we're going to try to give them every opportunity to play."

Williams, however, probably won't be ready to play any time soon. Surgery is an option, but that would likely keep him out for the 2004-05 season.

"I don't want to pressure Alvin into doing something that is going to hurt him down the line," Mitchell said. "If he has a chance to come back later on in the year or be healthy next year, I think that's more important for him than limp through half a season and then miss some games."

Carter, on the other hand, simply is getting a night off. Mitchell has said he plans to rest veterans for one pre-season game apiece and it's Carter's turn.

Benetton Treviso, the Italian champion three of the past seven years, is the second European team to play the Raptors in as many years. Last season, the Raptors beat Panathinaikos A.O. Athens, 100-76.

"I think if we come out playing hard and as long as we don't underestimate (Benetton), everything will be fine," Bosh said. "We're going into the game knowing we can get beat. We're going to make sure we go out there and defend our home court."
