Canada’s senior men’s squad really missed high-scoring veteran Carl English last summer.

On a team with limited scoring options, English, the Newfoundland native who has long been one of the premier gunners in the Spanish ACB (considered by many the best league outside of the NBA), could have played a major role in helping Canada qualify for this year’s World Cup. Alas, English had to leave the team due to injury.

But the 33-year-old squad elder statesman — “I’m not that old,” he said with a laugh Monday when asked if he was more of a coach on the floor these days — insists he is is still here to contribute both for the 11 exhibition matches this summer, and, more importantly, when Canada goes into Olympic qualification a year from now.

“This is a building year. Last year we came up short, we had some injuries and I believed that cost us, but this year we are taking it the right way,” English said after the second day of training camp at the ACC.
