Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs agreed to a multiyear contract extension.

The team announced the deal in a release Wednesday but did not disclose the financial terms or length of the contract.

Popovich said during the NBA Finals that he planned to coach four or five more years.

Popovich, 65, has coached San Antonio to five NBA titles since he was named head coach in 1996-97. During that span, there have been 213 coaching changes in the NBA. Among active coaches, only Popovich was hired to work for his current team before the 2008 season.

The Spurs won their first championship since 2007 last month when they defeated the Miami Heat in five games in the NBA Finals.
