John Wall saved it right at the very end, but the NBA Slam Dunk contest needs major surgery.

The format, as it is, is a buzz kill. The crowd in New Orleans was on its hands for most of the event, in particular for that first freestyle round that has to go as soon, or sooner, than commissioner Adam Silver’s sleeved jersey idea for the league.

The Washington point guard had what was easily the dunk of the night in the battle round going over a standing Washington mascot G-Man from whose hands he plucked the ball before taking it down between his knees and then finishing it with a reverse dunk.

There were a handful of good dunks throughout the night, but that one stood out.

Raptors’ Terrence Ross did his share in the event knocking out Damian Lillard, while Paul George took care of Harrison Barnes for Team East.
