Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade has branded the birth of his lovechild a “blessing” after confirming the baby was conceived during a break in his relationship from new fiancee Gabrielle Union.
The perennial all-star, who has been dating the Bring It On actress on and off since 2007, hit headlines on Monday when reports emerged suggesting he had recently fathered a son following a romantic encounter with an old friend.
He addressed the news on Monday evening during a press conference before the Heat’s game against the Denver Nuggets and insisted Union, 41, had accepted the new addition to his family before he proposed to her during the Christmas holidays.
He explained, “I had a time, a part in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy. So I’m moving on.”
Wade, 31, also declared he had nothing to hide as a public figure, stating, “I’m in the public eye, so obviously that’s a part of it (news of his personal life hitting headlines). It comes with the territory.”
He added, “(It’s important to) always focus on what’s most important to me and my family, and that’s being a great father. I’ve always tried to show my importance in my kids’ lives and it doesn’t change now. So, I, my lady and my family have continued to move forward, and I think that’s evident with the ring and the proposal that I gave her, with our lives.”
Wade also has two children from his marriage to childhood sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches, which ended in 2007.
Union, who is currently on vacation with friends, has yet to comment on the situation.
