Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd was fined $50,000 by the NBA for his actions in the final seconds of Wednesday night's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the league announced Thursday night.

With the Nets out of timeouts in the final seconds of the game, Kidd appeared to tell point guard Tyshawn Taylor to bump into him on the sideline.

Kidd then spilled a cup of soda that he was holding, forcing officials to stop play to wipe up the floor and giving his coaches a chance to bring the team together to draw up a final play.

Kidd said it was unintentional, but video replays appeared to show him saying "hit me" to Taylor.

"Cup slipped out of my hand while I was getting Ty," Kidd said. "Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball.

"In the heat of the battle, you're trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the cup fell out of my hand."

Taylor said he never heard the first-year coach say "hit me."

"No. I wasn't paying attention. I just kind of bumped him," Taylor said. "I didn't even know he was holding (a cup). (But) coach was drinking a soda on the sideline. I was like, 'What's he doing?'

"It could ice a free throw shooter and be a timeout when you don't have one, but that wasn't the thought process. I was just coming out, and he was in my way. 'Coach, get out of my way, bro.'"

Lakers guard Jodie Meeks was on the line with 8.3 seconds left and had just made the first of two free throws when Taylor collided with Kidd near the sideline. As workers cleaned up the mess, the Nets' coaching staff drew up a last-second play.

It was all for nothing, though. After Meeks made the second free throw, Nets forward Paul Pierce missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining and the Lakers held on for a 99-94 victory at the Barclays Center.
