ATLANTA - Gary Payton, hall of famer. Even the man known as “The Glove” for his suffocating brand of defence is having a hard time wrapping his head around the reality that he has joined basketball’s immortals.

Payton, who spent 18 years in the NBA, 121/2 of them with Seattle and won a championship with the Miami Heat, said he was humbled Monday, knowing how difficult gaining enshrinement is.

“It was a great feeling. I never thought I’d be at this situation right now,” Payton told the Sun.

“It still seems weird to be saying: ‘Gary, a hall of famer’ and then you think about people like Bernard King who had to wait so many years to get it and then I get it in my first year … it’s a big achievement and amazing to me that I could do that and that a lot of people respect my career like that.”

It was hard not to. He’s the only point guard ever to win defensive player of the year, a nine-time all-defensive first team member and a nine-time all-star.
