Triano to join Trail Blazers
Will likely lead Canadian national team

TORONTO - The next month is shaping up to be quite interesting for Jay Triano.

The former Raptors head coach is expected to soon be named an assistant coach in Portland under new Trail Blazers head man Terry Stotts.

Triano became Toronto's head of pro scouting after the team declined to pick up his option after the 2010-11 season.

The Dallas Mavericks had also been pursuing Triano, who was eager to return to the bench.

Just as he leaves Canada, Triano is also set to become the Canadian national men's team head coach for the second time. An announcement could happen next Thursday afternoon, according to sources.

Triano is a former national team star who did well in his previous tenure as head coach with Canada, particularly in leading the team on a stirring run at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Previous management at Canada Basketball declined to bring Triano back in 2005 and he eventually was scooped up by USA Basketball.

His commitment to that program ended after the Americans took home gold in London.
