MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota has turned to a veteran head coach to lead its young core.

The Timberwolves reached an agreement in principle on a contract with Rick Adelman on Tuesday.

The 20-year coaching veteran will take over a languishing franchise hinging its hopes to a young group led by All-Star forward Kevin Love.

The 65-year-old Adelman has a 945-616 career record during head coaching stints in Portland, Sacramento, Golden State and Houston. He left the Rockets this past April.

Adelman led Portland to a pair of NBA Finals appearances (1990, '92) and has just two losing seasons in 18 full seasons on the bench. Coincidentally, Adelman's son and Love played on the same Oregon high school team.

A press conference is expected at a later date to officially introduce Adelman in Minneapolis.
