LOS ANGELES — The latest buzz at all-star weekend centres on Isiah Thomas, who is said to be front and centre in the ongoing Melo drama.

While Damon Stoudamire was the on-court face of the Raptors when the team was hatched in 1995, the true face was Thomas, who called the shots.

Thomas has a way of endearing himself to ownership, which he did in Toronto, and pulled off the same trick in New York under James Dolan’s watch.

When word leaked that Dolan had turned to Thomas to expedite a deal that would send Carmelo Anthony to the Big Apple, many were taken aback.

Given Thomas’ ability to make deals and curry favours, the doubters should have known better.

The problem with Thomas has always been his unwillingness to handle matters that fall under his umbrella.

When he gets power, he wants more and now he’s pulling the strings for Dolan from Florida, where Thomas coaches college basketball.

As soon as the Nets allowed their proposed deal with Denver to get leaked, the Knicks upped the ante and are now said to be willing to part with either Landry Fields or more likely Danilo Gallinari as part of a blockbuster for Melo.

It may happen as early as Monday or as late as Thursday’s deadline day.

Say this about Thomas: He knows talent and he knows how to get things done.

The sad part to this whole Melo mess is that a well respected basketball executive such as Donnie Walsh is being compromised.
